What is a Mail-In (Special) Ballot?
A Mail-In (Special) Ballot is a means for eligible voters to cast a ballot if they will not be able to vote during the Advance Vote or on Election Day, due to physical incapacity or absence.
Who can request a Mail-In (Special) Ballot?
Electors who are unable to vote during the whole of the Advance Vote or at their Regular Voting Station on Election Day because of:
- Physical Incapacity
This incapacity may result from various reasons, including physical disabilities or serious illness.
- Absence from the City
Students attending an educational institution outside of Calgary, who ordinarily reside with family in Calgary when not attending school, or
Residents who are out-of-town or out-of-country for a temporary purpose; or
- Deputy Returning Officers (DROs), Candidates or Candidate Scrutineers or Agents
Persons working on Election Day, either for the Election Office or for a candidate, at a voting station other than the one for their place of residence;
are eligible and may apply to vote by the Mail-In (Special) Ballot.
How do I request a Mail-In (Special) Ballot?
Applications for the Mail-In (Special) Ballots can be made:
- in writing to the Election Office:

- by telephone to the Election Office:

- by fax to the Election Office:

- by filling out the Mail-In (Special) Ballot Form
When can I request a Mail-In (Special) Ballot?
Requests for the Mail-In (Special) Ballots may be made commencing July 1, 2010 and continuing until 4:30 p.m., Election Day, October 18, 2010.
When will I receive my Mail-In (Special) Ballot?
The mailing of the ballots and information packages to the requestors begins September 21, 2010, following Nomination Day.
When do the ballots need to be returned by?
The ballots must be returned in the envelope provided and received by the Election Office, no later than 8:00 p.m. October 18, 2010, Election Day in accordance with the instructions.
